Forest Management Planning

A forest management plan is the foundation of responsible land stewardship. Whether your goals include timber income, wildlife habitat, recreation, or long-term conservation, we work with you to develop a clear strategy tailored to your property.

Our process includes forest inventory and mapping, boundary inspection, invasive species assessment, and the development of a comprehensive management plan designed around your objectives. A professionally prepared plan can also qualify your property for programs such as New York’s 480-a Forest Tax Law and the American Tree Farm System.

With a well-crafted plan in place, you can move forward with confidence, knowing your forest is being managed thoughtfully and sustainably.

Safe, well-designed access is fundamental to fully enjoying your property. Whether you envision walking trails, snowshoe routes, cross-country ski trails, or improved vehicle access to remote areas of your land, thoughtful planning makes all the difference.

We work with you to design and develop trail systems that balance recreation, aesthetics, and long-term sustainability. From layout planning to on-the-ground implementation, our goal is to create durable, functional trails that enhance your experience.

Our Services

Invasive Species Control

Invasive species can significantly degrade forest health by killing trees, displacing native vegetation, reducing wildlife habitat, and limiting your ability to use and enjoy your property.

Hillcrest Forestry is licensed in New York State for pesticide application and brings years of hands-on experience in invasive species management. We develop targeted treatment strategies designed to control infestations safely, effectively, and responsibly.

Whether protecting ash from Emerald Ash Borer, treating hemlocks affected by Hemlock Woolly Adelgid, managing knotweed thickets, or targeted control of buckthorn in the forest understory, we work to restore balance and protect the long-term health of your forest.

Recreational Trail Planning and Development

Timber Sale Preparation and Administration

For many landowners, a timber sale is a once-in-a-generation decision. Proper preparation and oversight can make a significant difference in both financial return and the long-term health of your forest.

We represent your interests throughout the entire process — from marking trees and estimating volumes to preparing contracts, soliciting competitive bids, and administering the harvest. Our role is to ensure best management practices are followed, the operation stays on track, and your land remains productive for decades to come.

Boundary Line Maintenance

Clearly marked and well-maintained boundary lines are essential for protecting your property rights and avoiding future disputes.

Over time, paint fades, signage deteriorates, and boundary evidence becomes difficult to locate. We provide professional boundary line inspection and maintenance services to ensure your property lines remain visible.

Our services include locating and refreshing existing boundary markings, repainting lines, replacing signage, and identifying areas where a licensed land surveyor may be needed. Maintaining clear boundaries today helps prevent costly misunderstandings tomorrow.

Hazard Tree Assessment

Structurally compromised trees can present a serious risk to people and property. Having questionable trees located near buildings or valuables assessed for the risk they pose can provide peace of mind, and help you prioritize future work.

We are certified arborists through the International Society of Arboriculture. But in the interest of providing you with unbiased advice, we do not participate in hazard tree removal. You can feel assured you are getting a sound and objective assessment of your trees, focused solely on your sfety and best interests.

480A Plan Development and Enrollment

New York’s 480-a Forest Tax Law Program is available to landowners with 50 or more contiguous acres of eligible forest land who are committed to long-term forest management and the production of forest products. Enrollment in the program can significantly reduce annual property taxes while promoting responsible stewardship.

We assist landowners throughout the entire enrollment process. This includes preparing a management plan that meets program standards and clearly outlines your long-term objectives for the property. Once the plan is complete, we work directly with your local DEC office on your behalf to guide your application through approval.

Enrolling in 480-a is a long-term commitment that requires careful planning and compliance. We help ensure the process is straightforward, properly documented, and aligned with both program requirements and your management goals.

Forest Inventory and Mapping

A detailed understanding of your forest is essential for making informed decisions. We provide comprehensive forest inventory and mapping services as part of a management plan or as a standalone service.

Our inventory work includes timber volume and quality estimates, species composition analysis, forest health assessments, invasive species surveys, and detailed mapping of your property. Whether you need data to guide future management or simply want a clearer picture of your land’s condition, we provide accurate, actionable information you can rely on.

Wildlife Habitat Improvement

Many landowners value their forest not only for timber, but for the wildlife it supports. We help identify practical opportunities to improve habitat quality while aligning with your broader management goals.

Whether your interests include enhancing deer habitat, supporting songbird populations, encouraging pollinators, or promoting greater species diversity, we develop strategies tailored to your property. Through thoughtful forest management, we can help create healthier, more resilient habitats that benefit both wildlife and landowners.

Forest Stand Improvement and Vegetation Control

Forest Stand Improvement (or Timber Stand Improvement) is a treatment practiced in relatively young forst stands to promote the healthiest, highest quality trees present by removing less desirable trees that compete for light and growing space.

We can designate these trees of exceptional health and quality, and selectively remove competitors to set the stand on a course to grow desirable healthy trees that are destined to produce high value timber.

In areas overrun with undesirable or invasive vegetation, we can also provide full vegetation control by chemical or mechanical means to reclaim your property from the infestation.
